Isidor
St. Isidore
patron saint of the internet, please pray for us.

St. Isidore of Seville
St. Pope John Paul II thought we could use a saint of the internet to help guide us its proper use as well as protect us from its many dangers. So in 1997 he selected St. Isidore of Seville (560-636). There are many saints that go by the name of Isidore but St. Isidore of Seville is a Doctor of the Church and last of the Latin Fathers. He is also referred to as “The Schoolmaster of the Middle Ages” he was so learned. His most well known work, Etymolgiae (the study of origins), is a massive encyclopedic work indexing information that covers almost everything considered important to know at that time. Like a primitive database, it contains 448 chapters in 20 volumes!

Nothing official has been declared by the Church in naming St. Isidore as patron saint of the internet. Therefore you are free to pray to any saint in this matter. However, if you would like a prayer before logging onto the internet you may pray the prayer below. It was composed by Fr. John Zuhlsdorf. You may also change the name to whatever saint’s name you prefer.

Almighty and eternal God, who created us in Thy image and bade us to seek after all that is good, true, and beautiful, especially in the divine person of Thy only-begotten Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, grant we beseech Thee, that, through the intercession of Saint Isidore, bishop and doctor, during our journeys through the internet we will direct our hands and eyes only to that which is pleasing to Thee and treat with charity and patience all those souls whom we encounter. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
